How to use this User Onboarding Toolkit
Get a quick overview of how to use the tools and templates included below from onboarding expert and best-selling author of Product-led Onboarding Ramli John.
User onboarding flow audit template
The user onboarding flow audit is your guide to help new users become regulars. Use each column to catalog every step a user takes in your onboarding, including things like: filling out a form, clicking a button, watching a video, or completing a task.
After you’ve listed every step in your onboarding experience, you can prioritize these actions by labeling them as "Cut" (not essential), "Delay" (can wait), or "Mission Critical" (top priority).
User onboarding flow swipe file
I spent 27 hours digging into, signing up, and reviewing over 73 of the best and most interesting onboarding flows out there. I took that experience and packaged it all up into my User Onboarding Swipe File.
Some of my personal favs include Copper's helpful empty states, Zapier's AI tool, and Asana's gamified onboarding.
Branched free trial onboarding template
Use this Miro board to help you structure your free trial user onboarding experience—segmenting users by role, app type, and motivation to chart their optimal path forward.
Using the prompts in this branched onboarding framework, determine how to:
- Segment users by interest to serve them use case vs. feature-specific product tours
- Guide users who want to explore a product on their own
- Direct users who are ready to install to relevant resources
Onboarding drop-off analysis template
There's a certain amount of time and attention a new user will dedicate to your product. Use that time well, and they’ll spend it building momentum and realizing value.
But if you don’t build momentum—or waste users’ attention spans on low-value actions— they’ll probably churn and never return.
This template from Andrew Capland, Founder of Delivering Value, will help you figure out where most new users drop off in your onboarding experience.
5-Step Growth Flow Review
To uncover growth opportunities, you need to revisit your product flows regularly. This framework should help you connect Business thinking (Problem, Hypothesis, WSLL) with User-Centricity (User Journey, Emotions, Behavioral principles) to uncover meaningful improvements.
To help you navigate this new framework, Kate Syuma (Former Head of Growth Design at Miro) applied it for Dropbox Onboarding to illustrate how it can work in a practical example. Get inspired with an example of b2b self-service onboarding and find 10 insights and improvements.
User onboarding checklist
While every user onboarding experience is different (as they should be!), there are core elements you should include to help users find value in your product faster.
Does your onboarding experience include social proof? Too many irrelevant fields? Our checklist helps you audit your user onboarding to provide the best possible user experience.
